How can we help? 👋

Adding Physical Meters & Consumption

Covers how to create physical meters and upload or input their consumption values accurately within Scaler.

Scaler supports three methods for setting up physical meters:

  • Option 1: Directly in the Scaler Platform
  • Option 2: Bulk upload using the Scaler Spreadsheet
  • Option 3: Through a Data Request to other stakeholders (see article)
💡

Automating your data:

Consumption data can be automatically pulled into Scaler via a third-party API integration, but meters must first be set-up manually in Scaler and mapped to the third-party before they can be synced and start pulling data.

See this article for guidance.

1. Add Directly in the Scaler Platform

Meter Setup

  1. Navigate to the Data Collection Portal using the toggle in the top-right corner of your screen.
  1. Find the desired asset and click the pencil icon to enter edit mode.
  1. On the left-hand menu, select “Meters & Consumption”, navigate to the desired resource and click “Add meter”.
  1. Under Meter details, complete all required fields (marked with a blue asterisk *).
  1. Save the meter to close the edit drawer.

    1. Consumption recording includes Consumption, Start date, End date
    2. Meter reading includes Reading and Reading date
    3. On-site, solar meters have a toggle to Estimate using solar panel data
    4. Estimation waste meters include Number of bins , Volume of bins, Fill %
  1. To attach supporting documents (e.g. invoices or supplier documentation), click the paperclip icon to upload a file or link.

  1. Choose the applicable resource type (energy, water, or waste) and select some or all of the fields in the Meter Details and Consumption sheets.
    1. The Meter Details sheet, with the required fields, is always included when the Consumption sheet is downloaded.
    2. The Asset Details sheet is included by default with each download.
  1. Note: Guidance on expected values for each field/column is included in rows 7, 8, and 9.

Meter Setup

  1. In the "Energy/Water/Waste Meters" sheet, add a new row and copy/paste:
      • Scaler asset ID
      • Client asset ID
      • Asset name
  1. Complete these required Meter detail fields:
      • Meter ID (must be unique)
      • Subcategory
      • Source
      • Area type

Other Information

Tips for Meters & Consumption data

  • A meter defines any point of consumption.
    • Meters that are mapped between Scaler and a third-party should have the same structure, e.g. Consumption format.
  • Meter IDs must be unique.
  • If Covered area is not provided, Scaler defaults to the value of the matching floor area type from the “Floor Areas” section.
  • If no Meter end date is provided, the meter is assumed to be active.
  • Consumption periods can only overlap by 1 day within a meter.
⚠️

The Scaler Spreadsheet acts as the source of truth: Deleting records from the spreadsheet will remove them permanently from the platform upon upload.
