Purpose of this article
This article describes Scaler's Utility Sync Service and how automated utility-bill ingestion works for eligible providers.
Benefits of automated data sync
Automated bill sync eliminates manual data entry and improves data quality:
- Automation — entire process from data capture to validation is automated
- Security — connection procedure is secure and read-only
- Efficiency — outliers and validation errors are auto-flagged, saving time sorting through bills
- Accuracy — enhanced data quality due to increased accuracy and reliability
How automated data sync works
The sync process follows four steps:
- Provide credentials — provide login credentials and a meter list to initiate the connection with your utility
- Bill retrieval — Scaler securely pulls bills directly from your utility portal
- Data delivery — bills are delivered automatically to the platform for tracking, reporting, or payment
- Ongoing sync — accounts continue to deliver data and are reviewed regularly

Setting up automated bill sync
To enable automated bill sync for your accounts, work with your Scaler account manager to:
- Confirm your utility provider is supported
- Provide utility account login credentials
- Submit a list of meters to sync
- Complete the initial connection setup
Once configured, bills flow automatically into Scaler without manual intervention.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the sync process alter my account settings?
The sync process will not change any of your account settings or preferences. The only exception is if one of your utility accounts requires two-factor authentication. In that case, we may need to update the username to securely link the accounts. If this happens, we'll notify you right away, and you'll continue to have full access to your account. Nothing else about your account will be affected.
Can I still access copies of my bills?
You can access and download copies of your bills at any time for your records or payment billing needs. You are the owner of your data.
Does the utility sync also provide tenant data?
If you have access to the tenant's utility credentials, you can set up utility sync for any site as long as you have the utility account username, password, and site URL.
Is my data secure?
Scaler adheres to the highest data and security standards. We are annually audited by independent international standards to ensure 100% compliance at all times. All audits and reports can be viewed in our Trust Center.
Troubleshooting & common mistakes
- Sync not working → Verify your utility login credentials are current and correct
- Two-factor authentication blocking sync → Contact your Scaler account manager to update username configuration
- Missing bills → Ensure the meter list provided during setup includes all relevant meters
- Data not appearing → Check that bills are available in your utility portal; sync only retrieves what's accessible
