Purpose
This article explains how to enter energy cost data in Scaler and how that data is used to calculate and visualise energy spend and energy spend intensity in analytics.
How cost data works in Scaler
Energy cost data in Scaler is always linked to energy consumption records.
Cost values:
- Are entered per consumption record
- Are optional, but required for spend-based analytics
- Do not affect energy or emissions calculations
Once entered, cost data is automatically used to calculate:
- Energy spend (total cost)
- Energy spend intensity (cost per area)
Ways to enter energy cost data
You can enter cost data in two ways:
- Directly in the platform
- Via the Scaler Spreadsheet (bulk upload)
Both methods behave identically once data is saved.
1. In the Scaler platform
Navigation path:
Data Collection Portal → Portfolio → Asset list → edit asset → Meters & consumption
- Open the relevant energy meter
- Go to the Meter consumption section
- Enter a value in the
Costfield for each consumption record
- Save your changes
Each consumption record can have its own cost value and currency.

2. In the Scaler Spreadsheet
Navigation path:
Data Collection Portal → Portfolio → Asset List
- Select one or more assets
- Click Download in the floating action bar
- Choose Custom selection
- Search for cost, select the Energy Consumption sheet
- Download the spreadsheet
- In the Energy consumption sheet, enter values in the
Costcolumn
- Upload the completed spreadsheet back into Scaler

Where to view energy spend and energy spend intensity
Asset-level energy spend
Navigation path:
Analytics Portal → Portfolio → Asset List
In the Asset List table, the Energy spend column shows:
- Total energy spend for the selected reporting period
- Aggregated cost across all energy consumption records
This view is useful for comparing aggregate energy spend between assets.

Portfolio-level energy spend intensity
Navigation path:
Analytics Portal → Portfolio → Analytics → Energy
In the Energy intensity chart:
- Use the toggle to switch from
Energy use intensitytoEnergy spend intensity
- The chart displays cost per area (e.g. currency / m² / year)
Energy spend intensity is displayed using:
- Entered energy cost data
- Asset floor area
- Portfolio currency
- User display unit preferences (area only)

Important things to be aware of
- Energy spend analytics only reflect records where cost data exists
- Missing cost values may result in incomplete or partial spend visuals
- Currency conversion is applied automatically where relevant
