Purpose
This article explains how data completion works in Scaler and helps you understand:
- What is required to reach 100%
Data completion
- Why data completion can drop below 100%
- How meters and consumption do and do not affect completion
- How to identify and fix common issues at asset and meter level
Understanding these rules is essential for unlocking calculations, analytics, and reporting outputs in Scaler.
What “data completion” means in Scaler
Data completion reflects whether all required and conditionally required fields are correctly populated for an asset.
When data completion reaches 100%:
- Core calculations can run
- Analytics become available
- Reports can be generated (subject to report-specific requirements)
Data completion is evaluated structurally — not based on whether you have entered consumption values.
Three critical rules to understand (read this first)
1. You can reach 100% data completion without any meters
You do not need to:
- Create meters
- Add consumption data
to reach 100% data completion.
As long as all required asset-level fields are complete and valid, data completion can reach 100%.
2. Meters only affect data completion if they exist and are incorrect
Once meters are created, Scaler evaluates them for correctness.
If a meter is misconfigured and triggers an Error or Missing data alert, that alert will reduce data completion.
If no meters exist, meter rules do not apply.
3. Consumption is never required — but incorrect consumption can reduce completion
You do not need to add consumption to meters to reach 100%.
However:
- If consumption is added
- And it contains errors (overlapping dates, missing units, invalid ranges, etc.)
then those errors will reduce data completion.
How Scaler calculates data completion
Scaler evaluates data completion at three structural levels.
Asset-level completion
Asset-level completion checks whether all required and conditionally required asset fields are valid.
This includes:
Asset name
Client ID
Asset unit system
Main Property type
Main Property subtype
Country
Owned since
Active in analytics
Active in reporting outputs
Gross floor areafields
- Other required identifiers and characteristics
If any required field is missing or invalid, the asset cannot reach 100%.
Meter-level completion
(Only relevant once meters exist)
Each meter is checked for correct configuration, including:
Subcategory
Source
Covered area
Monitoring method
Purchased by
- Valid meter version start date (and end date, where applicable)
- No overlapping or duplicated consumption periods (unless marked as a correction)
Meters with configuration errors reduce the asset’s completion score.

Portfolio-level completion
Portfolio completion is the average completion score of all active assets.
A single incomplete asset will reduce the overall portfolio percentage.
Common reasons data completion is below 100%
Required asset fields missing
Typical examples:
- Missing property subtype
- Missing country
- Missing or invalid gross floor area
- Missing owned since date
How to fix:
- Go to Data Collection Portal → Portfolio → Asset List
- Filter and sort Error and Missing data alert columns
- Resolve relevant assets
- Enter or update the missing/incorrect data
Conditionally required fields not triggered correctly
Some fields become required based on values entered elsewhere.
For example:
- Enabling certain analytics
- Selecting specific reporting configurations
How to fix:
Review fields marked as conditionally required (often labelled “✓ C” in the spreadsheet template).
Meter configuration errors
Only applies if meters exist.
Examples:
- Missing source or covered area
- Invalid monitoring method
- Incorrect purchased by selection
- Overlapping date ranges
How to fix:
Open the meter → correct configuration fields → resolve all Errors and Missing Data alerts.
Consumption errors (if consumption exists)
Examples:
- Overlapping periods
- Missing units
- Invalid start/end dates
How to fix:
Edit consumption entries to remove overlaps and ensure valid date ranges and units.
Where to find completion issues
You can review data completion and errors in:
- Data Collection Portal → Portfolio → Asset List
- Filter by assets below 100%
Data completion - Resolve Errors and Missing data alerts
- Asset-level edit view
- Look for red (Errors) and amber (Missing data) indicators
Using the Portfolio Alerts dashboard for faster resolution
The Portfolio Alerts dashboard centralizes all data quality issues across your portfolio, providing a more efficient path to 100% data completion.
Location: Data Collection Portal → Portfolio → Asset List → Alerts
Why use this tool:
Instead of navigating into individual assets to find and fix alerts, the Alerts dashboard lets you:
- See all portfolio-level alerts in a single table
- Identify which issues affect the most assets
- Bulk-export a custom Scaler Spreadsheet containing only fields with alerts
- Resolve multiple alerts simultaneously through spreadsheet upload
Recommended workflow:
- Navigate to Data Collection Portal → Portfolio → Asset List → Alerts
- Filter by Critical alerts to focus on errors and missing data blocking calculations
- Sort by number of affected assets to prioritize high-impact fixes
- Select alerts and click Download
- Complete the custom spreadsheet with corrections
- Upload back into Scaler using the standard bulk upload process
This approach is particularly effective when the same alert appears across multiple assets, allowing you to resolve all instances in a single spreadsheet operation.
Key takeaway
Data completion is about correctness, not volume.
You can reach 100% completion before setting up meters or adding consumption.
But once meters or consumption exist, any errors introduced must be resolved.
If you’re stuck below 100%, focus first on:
- Asset-level required fields
- Then meter configuration (only if meters exist)
- Then consumption issues (only if consumption exists)
