Troubleshooting Data completion

How to find and fix blocking issues that are preventing your assets from reaching 100% Scaler Data Completion.

Purpose

If one or more of your assets are below 100% Scaler Data Completion, this article helps you locate the blocking issues and resolve them. For background on how data completion and alerts work, see Understanding data completion and alerts.

Why data completion is below 100%

An asset is below 100% Scaler Data Completionbecause it has blocking issues — errors or missing data alerts that must be resolved before calculations can run. The only way to reach 100% is to fix all blocking issues for that asset.

Warnings do not block completion and do not need to be resolved to reach 100%.

Finding your blocking issues

There are three places to view blocking issues across your portfolio, each suited to different workflows.

Portfolio Alerts dashboard — recommended starting point

The Portfolio Alerts dashboard shows all blocking issues across the portfolio in a single table, grouped by issue type. This is the most efficient starting point, especially when multiple assets are affected by the same issue.

Navigate to: Data Collection Portal → Portfolio → Alerts → Blocking issues tab

Each row represents a distinct alert type. The Number of assets column shows how many assets are affected, making it easy to prioritize. See How to use the Portfolio Alerts dashboard for the full workflow.

Asset List

The Asset List is pre-sorted so that assets with blocking issues appear at the top. Each asset row has dedicated columns for errors and missing data, so you can see at a glance which assets are affected and what type of issue they have.

Navigate to: Data Collection Portal → Portfolio → Asset List

You can further narrow your view using the quick filters at the top of the list to show only assets with errors or missing data, or sort the columns to bring the most critical issues to the top.

Individual asset alerts

Each asset has its own alerts table listing all blocking issues and warnings in one place. This is useful when investigating a specific asset in detail.

Navigate to: Data Collection Portal → Portfolio → Asset List → select asset → Alerts

Click any alert in the list to navigate directly to the affected field.

Common blocking issues and how to fix them

1. Required asset fields missing

The most common cause of incomplete assets. A required field at the asset level is empty or invalid.

Common examples:

  • Property subtype not selected
  • Country not set
  • Gross floor area missing or zero
  • Owned since date not entered

To fix in the platform: Open the asset → navigate to the flagged field → enter or correct the value → save.

To fix in bulk:

  1. Go to the Portfolio Alerts dashboard → Blocking issues.
  1. Select the relevant alert(s) using the checkboxes.
  1. Click Download — a Scaler Spreadsheet downloads containing only the affected assets and only the flagged fields.
  1. Complete the missing values in the spreadsheet.
  1. Upload the corrected spreadsheet via Data Collection Portal → Bulk upload.

2. Conditionally required fields

Some fields only become required when a specific condition is met — for example, when a reporting framework is enabled, or when a particular value is selected elsewhere in the asset. These trigger a missing data alert when left empty.

The alert description will indicate what triggered the requirement. Open the asset and navigate to the flagged field to review and complete it.

3. Meter configuration errors (only applies once meters exist)

Once meters are created, Scaler validates their configuration. Common issues:

  • Source not selected for an energy meter
  • Covered area missing or exceeding the corresponding floor area
  • Monitoring method not set
  • Overlapping date ranges between meter versions
  • Whole-building and sub-area meters mixed for the same resource type

To fix in the platform: Open the asset → Meters & Consumption → select the affected meter → correct the flagged fields → save.

To fix in bulk: Follow the same spreadsheet workflow as above, selecting the meter configuration alerts from the Portfolio Alerts dashboard.

Note If you haven't created any meters yet, meter validation rules don't apply. You can still reach 100% completion without meters.

4. Consumption errors (only applies once consumption has been entered)

Consumption is never required to reach 100%, but if consumption has been entered and contains errors, those errors will reduce completion. Common issues:

  • Overlapping consumption periods within the same meter
  • Invalid or missing start or end dates
  • Missing units

To fix: Open the asset → Meters & Consumption → select the affected meter → edit the consumption entries to remove overlaps and ensure all dates and units are valid.

Troubleshooting & common mistakes

  • Still below 100% after fixing asset fields → Check whether meters exist and have configuration errors. Open the asset's Alerts tab to see if meter-level blocking issues remain.
  • Warnings showing but completion is at 100% → This is expected. Warnings do not block completion. Review them and take action if needed, but they won't prevent calculations from running.
  • A field I filled in is still flagged as missing → The field may be conditionally required and the triggering condition hasn't been met, or the value entered didn't pass validation. Check the alert description for detail.
  • Completion dropped after a spreadsheet upload → The upload may have introduced meter or consumption data with errors. Check the upload log and review new alerts in the Asset List.
