Purpose of this article
This article explains how CRREM North America 1.5°C pathways (V2.04) are implemented in Scaler, what makes them different from earlier CRREM methodologies, and how to correctly enable, view, and interpret them at both asset and portfolio level.
Quick overview
CRREM North America V2.04 applies a network- and climate-specific methodology that reflects the diversity of North American energy systems and climate zones.
This improves transition-risk precision, but requires additional asset configuration compared to earlier CRREM pathways.
What makes North America V2.04 different?
Earlier CRREM methodologies for North America relied on a simplified approach using only:
Country
Property type
CRREM North America V2.04 introduces a more granular methodology, recognising that transition risk varies significantly across:
- energy infrastructure,
- climate zones, and
- regional electricity networks.
CRREM pathways supported in Scaler
Scaler supports both the legacy and updated CRREM pathways:
Pathway | Methodology used |
CRREM Default 1.5°C | V2.04 (Europe & others), V2.03 (North America) |
CRREM North America 1.5°C | V2.04 (United States & Canada only) |
Asset requirements for CRREM North America V2.04
To display a CRREM North America V2.04 pathway, the following asset-level inputs must be configured:
Location: United States or Canada
Climate zone: Assigned at asset level
Energy network: Assigned at asset level
Property type: Must map to a CRREM-covered ULI property type- See this article for full mapping
If any of these inputs are missing, the pathway will not display.
How to enable and view the pathway
Enable the pathway at portfolio level
- Go to Data Collection Portal → Portfolio → Targets & Benchmarks → Targets
- Under Default Targets, enable CRREM North America 1.5°C (Energy & CO₂)
If the pathway is not enabled at portfolio level, it will not appear anywhere in Roadmaps.
View the pathway at asset level
- Go to Analytics Portal → Portfolio → Asset List → asset → Roadmaps
- Select CRREM North America 1.5°C from the pathway dropdown
View the pathway at portfolio level
- Go to Analytics Portal → Portfolio → Roadmaps
- In the location dropdown, select the appropriate ‘Country (energy network - climate zone)’
- Choose CRREM North America 1.5°C from the pathway dropdown
Interpreting portfolio results correctly
Because CRREM North America V2.04 applies stricter eligibility rules:
- The number of assets included may differ from other CRREM views
- Aggregated portfolio pathways may include assets that do not qualify for V2.04
- Asset counts should always be reviewed when switching pathways or filters
This behaviour is expected and reflects the increased methodological precision of V2.04.
Property type mapping (ULI)
CRREM North America pathways rely on Urban Land Institute (ULI) property types, not GRESB-aligned categories.
Scaler automatically maps internal property types to the appropriate ULI equivalents when North America pathways are selected, ensuring correct pathway assignment for U.S. and Canadian assets.
See this article for full mapping.
What’s coming next
Planned enhancements related to CRREM North America pathways include:
- Net Zero Carbon Scores aligned with V2.04 pathways
- UX improvements to make pathway-specific filters clearer
- Expanded pathway support as CRREM evolves
Troubleshooting: why don’t I see the CRREM North America pathway?
If the CRREM North America 1.5°C (V2.04) pathway does not appear, check the following.
1. The pathway is not enabled at portfolio level
- Go to Portfolio → Targets & Benchmarks
- Confirm CRREM North America 1.5°C (Energy & CO₂) is enabled
2. The asset is not located in the U.S. or Canada
CRREM North America V2.04 applies only to:
- United States
- Canada
Check:
- Asset details → Country
3. Required asset inputs are missing
Confirm the asset has:
- a climate zone,
- an energy network, and
- a supported ULI-based property type.
Missing or unmapped fields will prevent the pathway from displaying.
4. The property type does not map to CRREM (ULI)
Check:
- Asset details → Property type
- Confirm it maps to a supported ULI category
If it does not, the pathway cannot be calculated.
5. Filters are excluding eligible assets (portfolio view)
At portfolio level, restrictive filters can hide pathways unintentionally.
Check:
- country filters
- energy network filters
- climate zone filters
6. You are viewing the CRREM “Default” pathway instead
The CRREM Default 1.5°C pathway:
- uses V2.03 for North America,
- is based on country + property type only.
To use the updated methodology, explicitly select:
- CRREM North America 1.5°C (V2.04)
7. The sample size is smaller than expected
Because V2.04 is more granular:
- fewer assets may qualify,
- asset counts may be lower than in legacy views.
This reflects stricter data requirements and improved accuracy.
Always review the asset count shown in the roadmap.
Still not seeing the pathway?
If all checks above are met and the pathway still does not appear:
- review asset-level configuration fields,
- confirm portfolio settings, and
- contact the Scaler Support team for assistance.
