Mapping assets and meters on the Automations page

Learn how to connect assets to data providers on the Automations page API Mapping tab, and map meters individually or in bulk.

Purpose of this article

The Automations page gives you an overview of every asset in your portfolio, its connected data sources, and how many of its meters are syncing successfully. This article explains how to connect an asset to a data provider, map its meters, and use the bulk upload file to map many meters at once.

Before you start

  • Access level: Admin or Portfolio Editor
  • The Automations page must be enabled for your account. If you don't see it, contact your Scaler account manager.
  • The meters you want to map must already exist in Scaler.

Understanding the Automations page

Go to Data Collection Portal β†’ Portfolio β†’ Automations. Which tabs you see depends on your account setup:

  • API Mapping β€” connect assets and meters to your data providers (covered in this article). Available by default.
  • Bill Scraping β€” upload utility bills and track their processing. Shown when bill scraping is enabled for your account.

If you don't see a tab you expect, contact your Scaler account manager.

On the API Mapping tab, each row shows the asset's name, client ID, and address, with three mapping columns: Asset mapped, Meters mapped, and Sync status β€” the number of successfully synced meters out of the total (for example, 13/13). The summary bar at the top tracks unmapped assets and unsynced meters across the portfolio.

Connecting an asset to a data source

  1. Find the asset in the table and click Add data source (the + in the Data sources column).
  1. Choose the provider β€” for example Nectar, Energy Star, or Arcadia β€” and the utility type: Energy, Water, or Waste.
  1. Click Map Asset (the link icon in the Actions column) and choose the matching site from the provider's list of available sites.

Mapping meters for an asset

  1. After mapping the asset, click Map Meters (the three-node icon in the Actions column).
  1. The panel shows how many meters are mapped (for example, 13/14) and lists each incoming meter with its API Meter ID, Description, Site, and Type. The description is usually the most reliable way to identify the right match.
  1. Select the existing Scaler meter each incoming meter should be linked to. Where several Scaler meters share a utility type, all valid options are shown.

Suggest mappings (optional): click this to generate proposed meter matches automatically. The suggestions are yours to review, and nothing is applied until you accept it.

You can rearrange the table layout to compare columns more easily, and remove an incorrect link at any time by deleting the mapping.

Tip: Use the meter description as your primary matching key β€” API meter IDs alone are often not descriptive enough to identify the right meter.

Mapping many meters at once (bulk upload)

For large portfolios with hundreds of meters, use the bulk upload file instead of mapping one by one.

  1. On the API Mapping tab, click Download to export the bulk upload file. Select one provider at a time β€” this keeps the file manageable and the mapping cleaner.
  1. Review each row's provider, asset, meter description, and meter ID.
  1. Fill in Scaler asset ID (column G) and Scaler meter ID (column H) for each meter. Completed rows turn green.
  1. Save the file and click Upload. Processing takes around a minute, after which the meter mappings appear in Scaler.

The upload is checked by validation rules. The two most common errors are an invalid Scaler meter ID (usually a copy-paste mistake) and the same meter mapped to more than one provider. In both cases, correct the file β€” or create the missing meters in Scaler β€” and upload again. Each error is labelled with the specific issue, so you can see exactly which rows need fixing.

ENERGY STAR sources

Assets connected through ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager are mapped in exactly the same way. The connection itself requires a one-time setup and a short synchronisation period (typically 1–3 business days) before the sites appear on the Automations page. See ENERGY STAR connection set-up.


Troubleshooting & common mistakes

  • Bulk upload rejected β†’ Check that every Scaler meter ID was copied in full and that no meter appears under two providers.
  • The provider site you expect isn't listed β†’ The provider connection may still be syncing, or the site isn't shared with Scaler yet. Contact your Scaler account manager.
  • A meter has no valid Scaler meter to map to β†’ Create the meter in Scaler first, then map it.
  • New data isn't appearing after mapping β†’ Data arrives on the next scheduled sync. For an immediate refetch, contact your Scaler account manager.
